Inspired by Elgar’s ‘Dream of Gerontius’ The Black Angel photograph was taken by Rona Campbell and the poem by the same name, written by David Subacchi. It’s currently exhibited in the Undegun Gallery, Wrexham, North Wales until March 2020.
Who gathered this creature
Torn from the sky
By angry buckshot,
Hurled into the suction
Of chilling quicksand
Or did the wind
Playing tricks
Throw together
Wooden fragments
In the shape of a bird.
Some whisper of angels
And others of death,
We scratch our love
With fragile sticks,
Hope for the best.
